Take a Tour of California’s State Data Center

April 13, 2022 – The California Department of Technology’s state data center is a secure powerhouse that offers platform hosting, data storage, disaster recovery and virtual servers to federal, state and local government entities throughout California.

Protecting the state’s data is vitally important – the critical services Californians rely on can’t go offline due to equipment failure or severe weather. The facility operates near continuously year-round, with just 1 hour and 36 minutes of planned downtime per year. The LEED platinum site can withstand an 8+ magnitude earthquake and was specially designed with redundant features like temperature sensors, fluid dynamics software, uninterruptible power sources, dedicated battery rooms, and diesel generators and a water-supply tank to safeguard against outages.

The data center is always striving to improve efficiency. Three chillers and a heat exchanger remove heat and take advantage of the cool, outside air. The compound is surrounded by a solar canopy system that provides 11% of the facility’s annual electrical needs while reducing CO2 emissions by 875 tons – the equivalent of 173 cars off the road, every year.

CDT’s data center is home to the Security Operations Center (SOC). The SOC monitors advanced cyber threats across multiple platforms and all traffic that traverses the state network and IT systems owned and managed by CDT.

The data center also offers modern, reliable and agile varieties of platform hosting including mainframe computing Z+ solutions. More than 200 million online transactions are processed each month with more than 100 software products installed and maintained. The data center provides basic and premium tenant-managed plans that provide excellent value and layered security controls, storage as a service, disaster recovery as a service, backup as a service, and virtual servers.
